The Style
Wedding invitations typically follow the style and mood ofthe ceremony itself. Style can run the gamut from casual to very formal. Theinvitations and the rest of the wedding cards will need to reflect this.Outdoor rites lean towards the casual side. Weddings inside churches and hotelstend toward the formal.
Style affects the choice of paper, as well as the languageand font you will use. The way the invitation is packaged is also a styleissue. For the less formal wedding invitations, you could use cotton ortextured card stock. The typeface would probably not use the script fonts orthe ones used in calligraphy class. You might also consider some avante gardeway of putting it all together. For instance, if you are having the ceremony ina forest clearing, you might have some graphics on the invitation and theenvelope depicting forest scenes, or you can put love birds instead of theusual ornate swirls.
Formal affairs require the conventional styles. You willwant to use script fonts and write the invitation in the third person. You mayopt to use linen paper for both the invitation and the envelope. And yes, youwill use the regular plain envelope or one embossed with more elaboratedesigns. The later in the day, the more formal it will be.
The Colors
You need to consider two things when choosing the colorscheme of your invitation; your wedding colors and the venue. Certainly, youwill have to use one of your wedding colors for the paper and envelope. Yes,the wedding invitation itself will be in the same color as the envelope. The textof the invitation and color of the design will be different so that they can bevisible. In some cases though, the design is simply embossed and texture makesit pop out.
With the wedding invitation wordings, you can choose the same but darker color asthe paper. You can also opt for one of the formal colors gold, silver or black.Opposing colors are usually reserved for less formal affairs. You can also addglitter on or around the text to make it more vibrant.
Other Wedding Cards
They are mentioned here because they are prepared at thesame time as the wedding invitations. They are usually in the same colors andstyle as the invitation and some of them are sent out in the same envelope.
A response card is usually sent with the invitation. Thismakes it easy for your potential guest to RSVP. The card should already beaccompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope. You might also want toinclude the card of the gift registry to make it easy for your guests to choosea gift.
For formal receptions, you might have place cards at thetables to guide your guests to their proper seats. This place card may or maynot already be your thank you card. If they are not, you have to distributethis last card before anybody leaves the reception.
